Board uncovers Homecoming’s hidden treasure
Members of the Campus Activities Board re-convened Sept. 15 to discuss homecoming and possible upcoming semester events.With homecoming a week away, final plans were being made for the week of events.CAB will be holding royalty elections in the Student Activities Office on the second floor of Billingsly Student Center. Elections will take place on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, CAB will hand out 200 free t-shirts to students at the home volleyball game at 7 p.m. in the Young Gym. Following the at 7 p.m. in the Young Gym. Following the game will be a skate night at Keely’s Silver Wheels. Parents are asked to leave children at home.”We’re going to have some events where we can have kids there,” said Julie Blackford, director of student activities. “[Students] don’t go to these events to be around children. We’ll designate which events are kid friendly.”Other events include a lip sync contest and a bachelor/bachelorette auction. “We have 30 people total,” said Terry Levy, senior criminal justice/pre-law major. “There are about 14 guys and 17 girls.”The auction will take place in the Criminal Justice Auditorium.Rounding out the week will be the all-campus picnic and the homecoming parade. CAB will begin to give away free t-shirts at noon on Friday. The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. on campus.The CAB/Zimmer Radio Group giveaway is up to $300. If no one claims it this weekend, the pot will be $400 for homecoming.Other events discussed at the meeting were a Saved by the Bell night by transforming University Java into The Maxx and viewing old episodes of the show.Other ideas were a comedy series in which a different comic will come to campus every month, a decade night and karaoke. CAB is also sponsoring a political debate between the College Republicans and the College Democrats. The debate is scheduled for Oct. 20.Blackford said she enjoyed the meeting and would like to see more input from students who pay an activity fee.Everyone with ideas or interest in CAB is invited to the weekly meetings at 2 p.m. each Wednesday in the Student Activities Office.
