Volleyball wins three, snapping losing streak
Coming off a 2-2 showing at the Henderson State Classic Oct 7-8, the Missouri Southern volleyball team returned home Oct. 11.
The Lions then defeated the Southwest Baptist University Bearcats 3-1.
“I thought we did fairly well this weekend,” said Ashley Hill, freshman outside hitter. “We played together really well.”
“I think that a lot of us stepping up this weekend helped end our losing streak” said Ashley Mehrer, junior middle hitter.
In the first game at the tournament, the Lions faced Ouachita Baptist University, where they won the match 3-2.
Hill led the Lions with a team high of 22 points and 9 kills. Followed by Ashley Mehrer, with 21.5 points and 20 kills.
Trailing behind the two was Ashley Wright, sophomore middle hitter, with 18.5 points and 14 kills.
The Lions then faced the University of North Alabama. The Lions lost the match 3-1.
Mehrer led the Lions with a team high of 17 points and 15 kills, followed by Hill with 16 points and 15 kills.
The Lions later faced the University of West Georgia. The Lions won the match 3-1.
Hill lead the Lions with a team high of 21 points and 19 kills, followed by Sarah Hoffmeister junior outside hitter, with 16.5 points and 12 kills. Trailing behind the two was Mehrer with 15.5 and 14 kills.
The final game of the tournament was against Harding University. The Lions lost the match 3-0.
Hoffmeister lead the Lions with 15 points and 14 kills, followed by Hill with 11.5 points and 11 kills.
Trailing them, Mehrer had 10 points and 7 kills.
In the Oct. 11 game, Mehrer led the Lions with a team high of 16.5 points and 15 kills, followed by Hoffmeister with 16.5 points and 14 kills.
Straggling behind the two was Cherie Baugh, freshman outside hitter, with 15.0 points and 13 kills, and Wright with 12.5 points and 11 kills.
Hill finished the game with 11 points and 11 kills.
“I think that the game went really well,” Mehrer said.
“We did well on our blocks and charges. We need to be ready to step it up for this weekend’s game against Pitt.”
“Pitt’s a really good team,” Hill said. “I think if we step it up and improve in staying up in our match, we can do really well against them.”
The Lions play their next two games at home against their border rival, the Pittsburgh State University Gorillas, at 7 p.m., Friday in Young Gymnasium.
Wednesday, the Lions face the Washburn University Lady Blues at 7 p.m. in Young Gymnasium.
Southern’s record is now 9-15 overall and 2-6 in the MIAA.
