8:50 a.m.

A Department of Public Safety officer was contacted to the Mansion in reference to an electrical fire. The officer contacted a maintenance worker to the scene. The officer and the worker found an electrical cord had shorted out. They found the short was due to an electrical fan used to remove radon. The outlet was still live. A new amp was put in place. No damage was reported.

2:30 a.m.

While on patrol, a DPS officer found a trash barrel turned over and against a vehicle in parking lot 25. The vehicle had a dent and scratches on its side where the barrel had come in contact with it. The barrel was removed and placed upside down to keep the wind from blowing it over again.

Liquor Law Violation

2:30 a.m.

A DPS officer saw two male students escorting a female former student into East Hall. The former student appeared intoxicated. The officer smelled alcohol on her and asked the former student if she would mind taking a breathalyzer test. The subject said she had been drinking at a party off campus. The Joplin Police Department was contacted and an officer was dispatched to the scene. He talked to the former student about underage drinking. The subject was informed she would be arrested if she was found intoxicated on campus again. The subject called a friend to pick her up.

3:49 p.m.

The DPS office was contacted in response to a student viewing pornography on a computer in Reynold’s Hall. An officer found the subject as reported and he moved closer to the screen of the computer. The officer asked him to step outside of the computer lab so he could talk to him. The student said he had accidentally clicked on an icon for a pornagraphic site. The student had been advised of a similiar incident before and the officer gave him a copy of the computer use policy. The student was escorted out of the lab and told he could not use the computers on campus until the event was reviewed.

12:59 p.m.

A DPS officer was dispatched to the field northeast of Newman and Duquesne in reference to a fire. The Joplin Fire Department was contacted to extinguish the fire. The fire was found to be caused by a student doing a presentation. She said the custom in her country was to burn incense before a presentation. In burning the incense, she set the grass on fire and it spread quickly. She attempted to stomp it out, but could not. The JFD investigated the incident.

11:10 p.m.

An instructor in the Art Department contacted the DPS in reference to the smell of smoke in the building. The officer arrived and contacted maintenance to help investigate the area where the smoke was smelled. It was found to be coming from a motor inside an air duct. A hole was found in the filter next to it.
