Association hosts used glasses collection

There’s a chance on campus to get rid of those old glasses.

The Student Alumni Association is sponsoring the Lions Club Glasses Collection. Donation boxes are located across campus for dropping off frames or lenses.

The glasses drive began March 13 and extends through Friday.

“I think it is an excellent thing to do,” said Jason Terry, freshman music major. “Glasses are worth their weight in golf and they cost that much too.”

Terry thought it also helped out Missouri Southern’s international mission.

Collection boxes are located in the following locations: the Alumni Office, the honors office in Webster Hall, the front entrance of Matthews Hall, the front entrance of Hearnes Hall, the head office in Hearnes Hall and also the bottom floor of Taylor Hall, the cafeteria and first floor of Mayes Student Life Center, the student activities office, and in the dental hygiene clinic.

Being the first year for the SAA to host the drive, the organization will vote to decide if the event should be held annually.

Krista Clark, SAA secretary, said 15 pairs have been collected as of April 4. The SAA has flyers around campus advertising the event.

The glasses collection is an annual event for the Lions Club. Once collected, the organization cleans, repairs and classifies the glasses by prescription. The glasses are sent to optical missions in developing nations. Improving world vision has been a mission for the Lions Club since 1917.

“Everybody has a right to good vision,” said Efosa Egonmwan, junior accounting major. “Glasses are not difficult to get in Africa, but they are expensive.”

SAA works with the Alumni Association to support local charity. SAA promotes activities on campus and throughout the community. SAA members are current Southern students; SAA is always looking for new members. The purpose of SAA is to connect University alumni, students, faculty and community. The next SAA meeting will be Monday in the alumni office.

SAA next activity is distributing Easter baskets. Over fall break, SAA collected stuffed animals for the hurricane victims. With an ample supply of stuffed bunny rabbits, SAA decided to keep the rabbits for these Easter baskets.

Deb Gipson, programs and events coordinator for the Alumni Association, is the advisor for SAA. She can be reached at 625-9673 for inquiries on joining SAA.
