Golfers take 4th MIAA
On Tuesday, golf coach Kevin Greim walked away from Branson Creek Golf Course very disappointed. The Lions finished fourth at the MIAA golf championships.
“We were disappointed,” Greim said. “We could have finished 2nd.
“We just didn’t finish rounds that well, and the rounds that we finished well didn’t have good starts,” said Greim.
The winner of the tournament was Washburn, who completed the sweep of MIAA events this season with its fifth MIAA team title in six years. Washburn dominated the field, defeating second place Central Missouri by 29 strokes. Missouri Western finished third with Southern just one stroke behind.
“This was the first tournament of the season that we haven’t gotten better,” Greim said.
Tommy Clifford finished fifth with a four round 224, just one stroke off of third place. Senior Eric Byers shot a 225 and tied for seventh and senior Tyler Goecker shot a 228 and tied for 14th.
Southern will be back in action on May 7-9 at Twin Hills Country Club for the NCAA Division II Super Regional.
“We’ve got a couple of guys that could win it,” Greim said. “We know Twin Hills so if we’re not in contention to win we’ll be pretty disappointed.
“Tommy (Clifford) finished second in points in the MIAA and our other two seniors, Eric Byers and Tyler Goecker, are playing as well as they ever have since they’ve been here.”
