Season winding down
It was 4:30 p.m on Thursday evening at the Missouri Southern soccer field when senior midfielder Amy Davis passed the ball across the field in hopes of one last goal.
The ball landed on the foot of junior midfielder Nikki Llwellyn, who was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16. Llewellyn shot the ball past the goalkeeper and scores, with no time on the clock. Head Coach Trevor Wachsman blows his whistle, ending the fun of that day’s practice.
“The women’s soccer team, despite being on the road, won both away games recently,” said Trisha Freeman, a three-year Southern women’s soccer spectator. “I wouldn’t be surprised for them to make this their third consecutive win on the road. They are a great team, and are well practiced in the game.”
The women practice every Monday through Thursday till 4:30 p.m., preparing for the upcoming road game in Maryville, marking Southern’s third road game in a row.
“We are focused on playing and practicing our best and hardest,” Wachsman said, “A lot of teams play much harder at home, and we are going to prove we can play just as hard on the road.”
With the 25th-ranked Lions (10-2-2) on the road again this week, Wachsman said that any Southern support would be greatly appreciated because the team feeds off the energy they get from the fans.
“I’m really stoked about the next game,” said Kim Forest, sophomore Spanish major. ‘The women are doing really well this year, and I can’t wait to see where this momentum that they have built up will take them.”
“The team this year is really strong, and we have a good record this year,” Wachsman said. “Having seven seniors on the team this year doesn’t hurt either.”
The women only have four regular season games left, so those interested in seeing the women’s soccer team do their thing, there’s not much time left.
In their next game, they will face Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m. tonight at the NMS soccer stadium in Maryville.
“The women are really energetic and always play a hard game,” Wachsman said. “If you need something to do, watching the game is always a lot of fun, even if its on the road…again.”
