18-and-over nightspot keeps it ‘fun, lighthearted’
One of Joplin’s familiar hot spots opens back up with a new owner and a variety of reasons to come in.
John “J.P.” Parsons, one of the owners of Brewskiz, said his new 18 and up club is thriving. He’s been in the business a few years and he knows what people want.
“We just try to keep it fun and light-hearted in here,” Parsons said.
Brewkiz opened on Dec. 26 and has been what some consider the hottest spot in town ever since. Parsons said his club is so popular that he encourages patrons to show up early on Thursday, Friday and Saturday because he often reaches capacity and has to make people line up outside until some customers leave.
But he is still making changes to bring in more business on the off days. The plans include expanding his menu in the coming months, but for now there are Philly cheesesteaks and other bar foods are served until close every night.
“I know people either come in or they don’t,” Parsons said. “But right now we’re trying to find a happy medium that everyone can enjoy.”
Currently Brewskiz hosts a pool tournament and “Rotten Karaoke” with Ben Rotten every Sunday, and possibly a karaoke contest soon. Then on Monday, Pablo Pete hosts “Open Mic Night.” Tuesday offers include 2-for-1 finger foods. Wednesday is Ladies Night, complete with a wet T-shirt contest. Thursday is another Ladies Night. On Friday and Saturday nights, airbrush tattoos are available from Animal.
Parsons said Sunday through Wednesday is a little more laid back. But Thursday through Saturday Brewskies has a dance club atmosphere (which does require proper attire) and offers a variety of music including hip-hop, rock, pop, and country.
“Basically, we just play what people want to hear,” Parsons said.
Brewskiz also offers a sports bar type atmosphere with its two big screens and four more on the way. Free Wi-Fi is also available.
And with all these things happening at Brewskiz, Parsons said his biggest goal is just to have a place where people from different generations can come to have a good time.
“This place is meant for fun,” Parsons said. “If fights happen and underage drinking happens, then we can’t have fun.”
