Missouri Southern State University rolled out the green and gold welcome mats to welcome MSSU families as students, parents and alumni came together for the university’s Family Weekend celebration. This tradition designed to bring loved ones closer to the campus life held Sept. 19 and 20 brought a full slate of activities, highlighting both community and school spirit.
This weekend kicked off with a welcome dinner beside the alumni mansion where families enjoyed music yard games and food. Families were also given a chance to attend tours of academic facilities so they can see what their students are learning and what Missouri southern is bringing to their education.
Some other highlighted events where the makers market were families were able to shop local vendors around the area, a Rec Center open house where students and parents could go play pickle ball and tour. The Rec Center facilities and all families were invited to the MSSU football game as the Lions took on Northwest Missouri, and were sent off Sunday after brunch with MSSU President Dr. Van Galen, and MSSU First Lady Mary Van Galen.

Beyond all the festivities and activities, family weekend gave parents a glimpse of the students’ daily life, and a chance to see what their children get to experience on campus.
“Family involvement in academics during higher education as a value to student success,” Preston Hamilton, Family Weekend Events Director, said.
For the students, the weekend was a reminder of the support system, cheering them on from home. Many left campus with lasting memories in a stronger connection to the MSSU Lion Pride community.
