Missouri Southern State University is hosting the Willcoxon Innovation in Health Sciences Summit on March 27 in Taylor Auditorium from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The event is open to students and the public. Those involved in healthcare or hoping to be involved in healthcare are highly encouraged to attend. This year’s summit will feature several speakers, from the Joplin and other areas, who will address a variety of topics related to healthcare innovation.
Melinda Brown, the Director of the Gipson Center for Healthcare Leadership and Chair of the Healthcare Administration Department, highlighted several keynote presentations from outside the area. One speaker to look forward to is Mary Joy Garcia-Dia from New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Her talk will explore how digital technology, data, and informatics are transforming patient care and healthcare leadership. Another keynote speaker is Dr. Yayun Du from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Du’s research shows how technology such as smart sensors and robotics could improve diagnosis and treatment in the future.
From the local area, there will be an introduction and display from Joplin Regional Alliance for Health and Valkyrie UAS Solutions, which uses drone delivery systems to help address challenges in rural healthcare. There will also be a presentation from Dr. Crystal Lemmons, the Dean of College of Health, Life Sciences & Education at MSSU, and several presentations from undergraduate students during the luncheon session.
Brown says the goal of the summit is to “bring together healthcare professionals, students, researchers, and community members to explore innovations and emerging trends that will shape the future of healthcare and health sciences.”
She also said the event gives students an opportunity to “connect classroom learning with real-world healthcare innovation, build professional networks and better prepare for leadership roles in the healthcare field.”
Following these presentations, the summit will conclude with a panel discussion focused on challenges in rural healthcare.
