Time for a road trip: Memphis

Home to music greats such as Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, and – most importantly – Elvis Presley, Memphis is known for its cultural contributions to the identity of the American south.

While there are many things to do in Memphis, most college-aged kids would prefer a trip to the Ghost River Brewing Factory. Ghost River uses Memphis’ artisan drinking water to brew four styles of fresh handcrafted beer. Free tours are given at 1 p.m. every Saturday with reservation required. You can also take home the beer! For $10, you can take home a half gallon of Ghost River Brew.

Beale Street Entertainment District- The Blues were born on Beale Street. The street is one of the most famous streets in Memphis, and is the soul of old Memphis. Here you will find countless Blues joints, barbeque joints, live music and dance clubs, plenty of your favorite things along with a late night crowd and all of the revelers to go along.

Circuit Playhouse- The Circuit playhouse is the sister theatre to Playhouse on the Square. Memphis’ only professional live theatre offers the best of Broadway and off-Broadway at an affordable price. There is plenty of free parking and many nearby restaurants.

Cooper-Young Entertainment District- Located just east of downtown Memphis you can find a beautiful little enclave known as the Cooper-Young Historic District. This little corner has attracted an artistic and trendy crowd over the years. Here you will find artists and galleries alongside innovative restaurants serving a variety of cuisine. You will also find fun nightlife and live music every weekend.

Coyote Ugly Saloon- One of the most famous bars on the planet, it’s located in the heart of Memphis. Its open 365 days a year. You’ve seen the movie, now come see the real deal.

Memphis Grizzlies- Watch Memphis’ own NBA team in action each October through April at FedExForum, located on Beale Street. Let’s say you don’t have enough money to get into the FedExForum, you can also travel across town and watch the University of Memphis Tigers.
