Kelly White, sophomore midfielder from Rogers, Ark, makes a play on the ball during Southern’s 2-0 loss to Quincy last weekend.

The Lions’ soccer  season has started off a bit rocky as it began the season 0-2 with losses at home to the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Quincy University.

“It’s not the start that I was looking for when we started the season,” Head Coach Alese Woolard said. “But my players are showing real promise in the two games we have played.”

The Lions’ season opener featured a little bit of everything. Southern found itself down 2-0 at halftime, but with a new attitude in the second half, the Lions were able to battle back and tie the game in regulation. However, the University of Missouri-St. Louis had the upper hand and came out on top 3-2. The Lions mid-fielder Shannon Kuhn scored both of the team’s goals in the second half.

The Lions second game was also a home game against Quincy; The Lions took multiple shots on goal with Kuhn, Katelyn Roberson, and Brianna Mckenzie all shooting but with no actual goals to show for their effort as the Lions fell 2-0 to Quincy, dropping their overall record to 0-2. “Every game will be a learning opportunity for my players; we just need to stay consistent throughout the season in order to have a good season,” Woolard said.

Woolard also mentioned that the team needs to move the ball well together and have sharper connections on the field.

The Lions tried to enjoy their opening home games, but will now head out on the road for the first time this season. Southern will travel to Austin, Texas this weekend on Sept. 9 to play Heartland conference opponent St. Edwards at 4 p.m. The team will stay in Texas, to play another Heartland team, St. Mary’s, in San Antonio on Sept. 11.
