Junior wide receiver Landon Zerkel, of Webb City, sprints down the sidelines at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. This 92-yard touchdown was one of three for Zerkel as he racked up 193 receiving yards on his way to MIAA Football Athlete of the Week honors.

Three Lions earned MIAA Player of the Week honors for their achievements last week.

Representing women’s cross country was junior Marlee Tegenkamp who was the top finisher in the Sept. 21 dual meet with Pittsburg State University, finishing only behind former Lion Ashley Bunch, who ran unattached.

Tegenkamp finished in a time of 17:33.60, a full 23 seconds in front of the next closest finisher. The women’s and men’s cross country teams had to schedule last Wednesday’s meet because of the cancelation of the Southern Stampede. This weekend, they will compete at the Oklahoma State University Jamboree in Stillwater, Okla.

Southern’s football team had two players earn the honor.

Junior wide receiver Landon Zerkel and freshman defensive end Ryon Phillips were named on the offensive and defensive team, respectively.

Zerkel hauled in eight catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns on the way to Southern’s 56-14 drumming of Lincoln.

“Just a great honor, but none of that happens without your entire offensive unit,” he said. “We really had a good game and look to build off this last Saturday for homecoming weekend.”

Phillips collected four tackles, all for a loss of yards, a total of 30. Phillips also logged two sacks, setting the Blue Tigers back a total of 17 yards on those plays. The 6-foot-3, 220 pound freshman also added a forced fumble, which he recovered, and a pass breakup at the line of scrimmage.

“It’s a testament to good outings,” Head Coach Bart Tatum said. “Now we have to pad back up and do it again.”
