Lions return home to open conference slate

The Lions’ soccer season is moving right along, but the Lions are experiencing a few hitches early on in their season.

“I gave us a tough schedule early in the season to prepare my team for good competition,” Head Coach Alese Woolard said. “Things are not yet going our way, but the players are staying hungry and dedicated to winning.”

She also mentioned that the team is developing great chemistry on and off the field. Woolard suggested the team may be even closer together after they had a two-game road trip to Texas from Sept. 9 to 11.

The Lions, who dropped their first two games at home, were seeking their first win when they traveled to Texas to play St. Edward’s University from Austin, and St. Mary’s University from San Antonio. The Lions played their first game against St. Edwards and managed only three shots to St. Edwards’ fourteen, resulting in a 2-0 loss.

The team then traveled to San Antonio to play the Rattlers of St. Mary’s. This would turn out to be a two overtime game that had no winner, as the Lions ended up tying St. Mary’s 1-1.

“We created a lot of good chances, we just could not finish them, and that’s what separates the good teams from the average teams,” Woolard said. “I need some players to step up more and create more chances at the net, but each week the team is improving and getting better so I have a great amount of faith in them.”

After the Lions’ two-game road trip, they now head back home for a three-game homestand which features a conference game against Truman State University on Sept. 22.

“The team is getting excited to play at home and will try to bounce back from early season home losses,” Woolard said. “As of now the team is ready and pumped to start conference play.”
