Lions get ‘off the bench’ to score

Missouri Southern’s women’s soccer team couldn’t snag two wins again last weekend, instead going 1-1.

Truman won 2-0 against the Lions on Friday, and the Lions won 6-3 against Lindenwood on Sunday.

The team is 3-6-1 overall and 3-3 in the MIAA.

“The game we played against Truman was kind of a rough one,” sophomore goalkeeper Beth Hammons said. “They bring a lot to the table every year.”

The Bulldogs scored the first goal on Friday in the eighth minute of the game.

Southern was able to keep the game close, only trailing 1-0 at halftime.

The Lions threatened to tie the score a handful of times, but the Bulldogs were able to score another goal and put the contest away.

“It wasn’t our best performance,” senior forward Megan Stueve said. “Truman is a very good team. We didn’t play to our full potential.”

The weekend wasn’t for naught, however, as the team was able to rise again on Sunday, picking up its third win of the season at Lindenwood.

“We redeemed ourselves on Sunday and broke out of the slump we were in,” Hammons said. “We had three goals in nine minutes, which really got everyone pumped and really motivated to finish and win the game.”

The Lindenwood Lady Lions scored the first goal of the game in the sixth minute, but Southern was quick to respond when Tiffany Laughlin scored her first goal of the season, tying the game.

The Lions led 2-1 at halftime after senior midfielder Candis Clark scored her second goal of the year.

Lindenwood tied the game by minute 55. Stueve and company responded by kicking four goals in a nine-minute stretch in the second half.

Stueve, Courtney Saunders, senior forward; and Katelyn Roberson, sophomore forward, were responsible for the four goals—Steuve’s two in that stretch were her sixth and seventh of the season.

“We had a lot of different girls making goals which is huge for us,” Stueve said.

“We had girls coming off the bench and making goals. We played hard and put the game away and we’re really proud of the win.”

This type of win is indicative of the goals this team has had this year.

“It [the win] really set the standard for the rest of the season,” Hammons said.

Next, the Lions will play Central Missouri at 7 p.m. tonight and Southwest Baptist at 1 p.m. Sunday.
