Senior Marlee Tegenkamp sprints past a Midwestern State runner at the finish of the national championship race in Joplin.

The Missouri Southern women’s cross country team has ended their season, and they’ve done it with a measure of success.

The lions opened their season at the University of Arkansas.

Junior Kaitlyn Belisle from Enid, Okla. took sixth place 16 seconds behind the leader.  Emily Harris a freshman from Farmington, Mo earned a tenth place time of 15:13.6, followed by Senior Marlee Tegenkamp from Lee’s Summit in 13 and sophomore Lauren Baehr from Owensville, Mo in 15 place.

At the First to Finish Southern Stampede the women’s cross country team earned third place.

They were the top Division-II teams in the race.

Harris led the Lions in 14 place with a time of 18:10.14, followed by junior Rachel Schrader from Bolivar in 16 place with at time of 18:18.18, Tegenkamp and Belisle in 26 and 30 place. Baehr finished in 49 place.

The Lions attended the Oklahoma State Jamboree where the team earned an 8 place finish.

Schrader placed 28 overall, setting the pace and finishing with a Division-II fourth-highest time of 18:55.44.

At The Jacking Jocks invite hosted by Missouri S&T the team earned third place.

Belisle led the race for the women earning sixth place with a time of 18:05.29.

Tegenkamp earned a time of 18:18.91 placing 10.

The women took home the 2012 MIAA championship title.

Belisle and Schrader led the group in 5 and 6 place with All-MIAA status times of 22:42.10 and 22:43.18. Tegenkamp and Baehr followed with a 15 and 17 place finishes, respectively. Kendrick earned 35 place with a time of 23:53.88, Mengwasser followed with a time of 24:04.24 in 42 place.

Hovis placed 61 and Hutsell placed 84.

At NCAA Division-II Regional’s the women earned fourth place, qualifying for a spot in the 2012 NCAA Division II National Championships.

Three of the women’s runners took home All-Region honors. Schrader led the race for the Lions earning a 11 place time of 21:46.3. Tegenkamp earned 18 place with a time of 21:46.3 followed by Belisle with a 21 placing time of 22:00.9.

“We have a solid team that has won the conference championship and qualified for national championships, which was our two big goals going into the season. Our third goal is still ahead of us and that’s to run well in this national championship on our home course,” women’s coach Patty Vavra said. “There aren’t that many people that can get to finish their season competing at the national championship on a high note year in and year out. It’s nice to be back after we missed out last year.”

The Lions closed the season at home, in the NCAA Division II National Championships taking home 20 place.

Schrader led the lions, earning 66 in the 6k race with at time of 21:48:1, Tegenkamp followed in 91 with a time of 22:09.9.

The Lions earned 490 points.
