Lauren Silberman is making history as she is the first female to ever register to participate at an NFL Regional Scouting Combine.

Silberman is a graduate from the University of Wisconsin and received a Master’s degree at MIT and plans to tryout as a kicker for the NFL.

Yes, women and men should have equal rights and equal opportunities and Silberman is getting an equal opportunity, but it is more about the opportunity.

When it comes to sports, women and men are not always capable of the same actions; especially without proper training.

Silberman is 28 years old and never played an NCAA sponsored sport, she has only played club soccer at Wisconsin.

According to Fox Sports, Silberman’s father said she had no background as a kicker but had made a 40-yeard field goal before, which encouraged her to attend the Regional Combine, even if the odds are stacked against her.

Of course the odds are stacked against her, she is not competing until March 2-3, but there is a combine Feb. 22-26 where kickers trying out have much further experience than Silberman.

For example, according to nfl.com, Quinn Sharp from Oklahoma State is 6’1”, 205 pounds, and has logged over 384 kickoffs in his four-year career.

How is Silberman supposed to compete with that? Some may ask if she is taking this tryout seriously or just to be another voice for women.

When she was interviewed by NFL AM, she said, “I realize that I may not make an NFL team this year, but for me, you know, I am expecting to have fun, to meet really interesting people, and hopefully perfect my technique from the other tremendous kickers that will be in attendance.”

Throughout the interview she says that she is going to practice to try to make a 60-yard field goal and that she just wants to help strengthen the league.

Silberman wrote a thesis on how athletes could use video games to improve their performance and she hopes to learn more about how virtual video games could be used as a training tool for professional sports.

It seems that Silberman knows she does not have a chance to make a team, but is just participating for the experience.

She is a 28-year-old female with little athletic background.

Let’s get real.

What is she thinking?
