Pittsburg State University might be Missouri Southern’s rival, but across from the Gorillas’ campus is Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, a Tex-Mex restaurant that is changing the game.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop landed in Pittsburg on Dec. 9, but it has been a staple in college towns for 10 years, ever since it originated in Ft. Worth, Texas, said general manager Mayur Patel.

The restaurant has an extensive variety of Tex-Mex options in addition to two full bars.

“We offer unique food and a fair price,” said Patel. “We use feta cheese, for example. I don’t know of anyone else who puts feta cheese on their tacos. That’s one thing different we do. We try to take the classics and make it a funky way.”

He said that all of the recipes are made from scratch including the queso and the enchilada sauce, and they fry their own chips.

“Something unique about this particular location — every Fuzzy’s is different — is this one has three levels,” he said.

Fuzzy’s Taco Shop customers of all ages can visit the main floor, which is divided into two large sections.  The first story is decorated in bright colors and has a casual, energetic vibe. The second floor is open to customers age 21 and up after 9 p.m., or it can be reserved for special occasions.

“We do catering, birthday parties, any event you may have,” said Patel.

The third story is an outdoor deck that is still under construction, but Patel expects it to open in time for warm weather. It will have another bar and a big screen TV for sports and movie nights, he said.

Don’t let the Pitt State students get in on all the action this summer on that open deck — head over to Pittsburg and take a walk on the wild side.
