Jake Messer, a sophmore psychology major and student senate public relations chair, discusses the issue of social media at this weeks student senate meeting on Wednesday, March 5.

In the final meeting before taking a two-week break, Student Senate discussed a number of issues including the annual St. Baldrick’s event and the introduction of new Senators.

Six new Senators were formally introduced at the meeting on Wednesday night.

The six new Student Senators are Joshua Boley, senior, mass communication; Joshua Lowry, senior, finance and accounting; Stacy Sonntag, sophomore, psychology; Nga Vo, senior, biochemistry; Stephany Aguinaga, senior, biology;

and Jude Obeto, senior, health science and business.

All the candidates were interviewed and recommended by Senate’s vacancy committee.

Vice President Brittany Lampe talked about the final steps Senate needed to take before the St. Baldrick’s event on Wednesday, March 12.

“I still need volunteers so I will come by during committees and figure out what each individual can do,” said Lampe.

St. Baldrick’s is Senate’s philanthropy, and Lampe does the majority of the work on setting the event up and raising funds for it. St. Baldrick’s is an organization that raises money for childhood cancer research.

Darren Fullerton, vice president of academic affairs, said, “Brittany has done such a great job on this, as well as the other Senators, and it’s a really good time.”

After the body meeting, Senate broke into subcommittees.

The finance committee entertained appropriations from two different organizations: the Respiratory Therapy Club and Sigma Tau Delta.

The Respiratory Therapy Club requested funds to help pay the fees of a conference they plan to attend. The club was represented by club president Kylie Schiermeier, senior, respiratory therapy.

“There are several events and competitions at the conference, as well as several renowned speakers,” said Schiermeier.

Sigma Tau Delta was seeking partial reimbursement for the money spent to travel to Savannah, Ga., for a literary conference. Three Southern students attended the conference, and two of those students won awards for their work at the event.

Both appropriations will be voted on at the next Senate meeting on Wednesday, March 26.

Senate has set up an open forum for Southern studemts to come and discuss the proposed ROAR fund.

If implemented, students would receive a $4 fee per credit hour that would go towards funding athletics.

The forum will be held a 6 p.m. on Thurday, March 13, in Billingsly room 309.

Messer spoke about several new outlets Senate has recently implemented, including a new twitter account (@mssusenate) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/mssusenate).
