Marlee Tegenkamp, senior art major, speaks about her senior exhibit experience.

A group of eight seniors from the art department are displaying their final artwork at the 2014 Senior Art Exhibition in Southern’s Spiva Art Gallery until April 26.

Work featured is by Sarah Akers, Melinda Batton, Brennan Davis, Melanie Friend, Sarah Hall, Meagan Jones, Marlee Tegenkamp and Cat La Vite. These seniors have been brainstorming ideas since their first semester and began designing their pieces this semester.

“I know it has been hours [spent] working on each piece, making sure everything is the best it can be,” said Teegenkamp, senior graphic design major. “My favorite piece is the dress I designed out of folded paper. It involves screen printing and origami to create a geometric dress that’s consistent with my dresses I designed digitally.”

Artwork from the seniors will include graphic design, typography, jewelry, photography and sculpture.

Some seniors used Adobe software to create their digital work.

“[My exhibit] is based on physically coming out of darkness, which could be hurt, illness, spiritually, etc.,” said Friend, senior graphic design major. “What I would like to portray in this exhibit is hope and grace.”

Friend’s exhibit, “Modern Emotion,” includes pieces based on photographs and video of dances with edited graphics.

After graduation, Friend says she hopes to work as a designer and plans to do freelance work as well.

Viewers can meet the artists at a reception April 26 from noon to 2 p.m.
