Saxophone instructor Levi Randolph will highlight a recital by Southern’s music faculty on Monday, April 27. The performance will be held in Corley Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Other faculty members who will participate include piano and accompanist Kathy Nenadal and applied percussion Chase Neely. All three performers are adjunct instructors at Southern. Performances include Light of Sothis, which will be performed in three movements called “Grace,” “Passion” and “Faith”; Fuzzy Bird Sonata; and The Marimba Divertimento.

“We’ve got the influence of the classical world and also of the jazz world, and then you’ve got all this repertoire that’s new 20th century or 21st century that some people may not like as much because they don’t really understand it. It’s kind of out there,” said Randolph.

After the intermission, Randolph will perform an electronic piece accompanied by an audio recording. He will hook an amplifier to a microphone to create delays and other effects on his saxophone. Randolph will also present a narrative piece discussing the unique history of the saxophone and how it became accepted into the symphony.

“It’s going to be a really great recital,” he said. “There is a variety of work that is going to be performed. With the depth of artistic writing, all of these pieces are really excellent pieces.”
