Tennis team serves up fifth at championships

Going into the championship tournament the Lady Lions tennis team was ranked third in the conference, and came out of the week placing fifth.The team was defeated by Southwest Baptist University, 5-3. The Lady Lions played the Lady Bearcats two times before and defeated them 6-3 and 6-2 the team was disappointed with the loss. Head coach Jane Posch said it is hard to defeat a team three times in one season.”We wish we could have played better for the first game,” said Lacey McMunn.The victors for the singles games were Amy Stredney (6-1, 6-1) and Christina Broyles, who won by default. The number two singles game was not completed. Defeated on the singles side were Sheryl Posch (6-3, 6-1), Kim McMunn (6-4, 2-6, 6-2) and Halee Phillips (6-2, 1-6, 6-3).Victors on the doubles side were Phillips and Broyles. The defeated were Sheryl Posch and Lacey McMunn (8-5) and Kim McMunn and Stredney (9-7).The Lady Lions did come back and win the fifth place match against Emporia State University (5-4). Jane Posch said the team beat ESU because it defeated them once before in the season (5-4).”We ended on a win which is good,” Lacey McMunn said. “We could have played better, but that’s how things go.”Sheryl Posch (6-0, 6-0), Lacey McMunn (3-6, 6-2, 6-2) and Kim McMunn (6-3, 6-0) won in singles play.Stredney (7-6, 6-4), Phillips (6-1, 6-1) and Broyles (6-0, 6-0) were defeated. Winning on the doubles side were Sheryl Posch and Lacey McMunn (8-1) and Kim McMunn and Stredney (8-6). Phillips and Broyles were defeated 8-0.Looking back on the season, Jane Posch said she was pleased with the way the season turned out.”Tying for third in conference was fantastic; we had a really great year,” Jane Posch said. “We have a fun group of kids; it’s a joy to work with all of them.”The team is hopeful for the fall season which begins in September. Lacey McMunn said she was encouraged by the way the team played this season. She expects with new players coming the team will improve on the spring season.
