In winds topping off around 20-30 mph, the Missouri Southern tennis team collapsed in a 7-2 decision to Rockhurst on April 1.

Senior Sheryl Posch said the wind was a big factor in the matches, but the team was prepared for it by practicing outside.

Posch defeated Jenna Lee (6-0, 6-4). Posch and Lacey McMunn defeated Lee and Heather Revier (8-5). Kim McMunn was defeated by Katie Anderson (6-2, 6-1), and on the doubles side, Kim McMunn and Amy Stredney were defeated by Carolina Aritisimuno and Steph Werthmuller (8-6).

Kim McMunn said her main struggle was her technique during the doubles part of the match.

“Most of the single matches I won close to half of them,” she said.

“Some of the kids are just better than me.”

The other doubles match saw Halee Phillips and Christina Broyles defeated by Carmen Briscoe and Deirdre Wedepohl (8-1).

Revier pulled off a close win against Lacey McMunn (7-5, 2-6, 10-5). Werthmuller thwarted Stredney (6-4, 6-2), and Briscoe swept Broyles (6-0, 6-0).

On March 29 and 30, the team split the two matches. The victors of the March 29 matches against Emporia State University were Posch and Lacey McMunn in doubles (8-3), and in the singles, Posch (6-0, 6-0), Lacey McMunn (6-1, 6-1), Kim McMunn (6-0, 6-1) and Stredney (6-0, 6-0). ESU players defeated Broyles (6-0, 6-0) and Phillips (6-0, 6-1) during the singles matches, and the pairings of Kim McMunn and Stredney (9-8, 7-3) and Phillips and Broyles (8-1) in doubles play.

Southern won the matches with a 5-4 decision.

The March 30 matches saw the Lady Lions vanquished by Washburn University (7-2).

The winners of the March 30 matches were Lacey McMunn (7-5, 6-4) in singles and Posch and Lacey McMunn (8-5) on the doubles side. The defeated Lady Lions were Posch (6-3, 6-3), Kim McMunn (6-4, 6-2), Stredney (6-4, 6-0) and Broyles (6-0, 6-0) in singles. Kim McMunn and Stredney and Phillips and Broyles fell in doubles, 8-4 and 8-3 respectively.

The team’s next match will be Friday and Saturday at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah.

Posch said there’s going to be tough competition at the tournament.

Kim McMunn said after the first team they play, they should win the rest of the games.

“If we play hard, we can come out winning,” Posch said.
