With a steadily improving program, the women’s and men’s soccer teams now have two new coaches – one for each team.

The new head women’s soccer coach is Trevor Wachsman, who was a two-year assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado. During his two years at UNC, he compiled a record of 28-12-1 and took the team into the NCAA Division II Tournament both years.

In 2001 and 2002, the squad earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic and Ethics Award. Wachsman’s father was a member of the Colorado Rapids. Wachsman said his father was a major influence in his playing soccer and coaching soccer.

“It’s been something that has been in our family,” Wachsman said.

“I love the game; it’s a great game. What makes it great, is it’s a players’ game and the coach can help paint a picture, but they’re not always telling the players what to do.”

Sallie Beard, athletic director, said she hopes Wachsman will bring a new freshness to the team. With a good amount of returning players Wachsman hopes to improve on what former head coach Geoff VanDeusen has started.

The new coach for the men’s soccer team is Kiley Cirillo. Cirillo graduated from Missouri Southern in 2000. He repeated as All-MIAA pick as a freshman and sophomore in 1997 and 1998 (1998 was the final season for men’s soccer as an MIAA sport) as a defender at Southern. When he finished his playing career, he served as assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams.

Beard said Cirillo was the first choice of the College and both teams expressed interest in Cirillo as coach. He had been working as director of coaching/director of club for the Springfield Premier Soccer Club.

Beard said the College chose two coaches because the program has grown to where the College needs two coaches instead of one.

“Both programs are going to benefit because they are going to have the undivided attention of a full-time coach,” Beard said.
