Lions look for first win of season

If the men’s soccer team thinks the win will come, it will come.

The Missouri Southern Lions are 0-6 on the season after coming off a tough loss to the University of Central Arkansas Sept. 20, 3-2. A referee called the game nine minutes into the first overtime. Freshman forward B.J. Wylie said he was upset about the call from the referee.

“There’s nothing we can do about it now,” Wylie said. “We’ve just got to move on to the next game.”

During the game the Lions were down 2-0 at halftime. After the half, Wylie scored the only two shots for Southern, unassisted from the left wing. Sammy Tejada of UCA scored the game-winning goal eight minutes into overtime, clinching the game for the UCA Bears.

Head men’s soccer coach Kiley Cirillo said overtime was a heartbreaker because the team showed a lot of character that hasn’t been shown for the last couple of games.

“They really felt like they could have won that game and so do I,” Cirillo said. “They didn’t walk away with their heads down. I didn’t let them do that.”

Cirillo said he encourages his team to think positive. The team thinks it can take the loss and help turn the team around.

“I think we’re going to get our first win,” he said.

“The guys feel confident and we’re going to walk away saying ‘I feel sorry for Missouri Valley.'”

Wylie said the first win will come and he hopes the win will come during the Friday game against Missouri Valley College.

Sophomore midfielder Patrick Hill said for the upcoming game, the team is practicing as it has been before previous games.

The Lions are working on their shots through the midfield.

“We’re preparing to go in and have a battle on our hands,” Cirillo said.

“Go into that with the mind frame, hey let’s get the win and play the game that we know.”

Cirillo said it is hard for the team to keep a positive attitude with a record of 0-6.

The game will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Hal Bodon Field.
