After a 12-day break, the Missouri Southern men’s soccer team got back to work against William Woods University on Oct. 24, and came away with a 3-1 win.

Southern was led to the win off of goals by senior defender Nick Brusca, freshman forward B.J. Wylie and sophomore middle fielder J.P. West.

“We did a pretty good job there,” said Kiley Cirillo head men’s soccer coach. “We actually got our shots on goal a lot better.”

In the next game on Oct. 26 against Drury University, the Lions were unable to score in a two goal first period and would fall to the Panthers by the score of 4-1.

Southern’s lone goal was supplied by freshman forward Dane Arand.

“We are going to win,” Cirillo said. “But it is going to take those hard knocks.”

“Right now we are really frustrated,” Brusca said. “We really wanted to win the Drury game.”

“It’s just effort,” West said. “When we want to play well, we play well.”

The final three games of the season for the Lions will find them squaring off against two of their three foes on the road.

Southern will play its final home game of the year against Harding University on Oct. 31.

The Lions will then go on the road for contests in Kansas City against the Hawks of Rockhurst University on Sunday and then onto Kirksville where they will tangle with the Truman State University Bulldogs on Nov. 8.

The men feel good about the upcoming stretch of games.

“I think that the mood of the team is, ‘we want to win, how can we?'” Cirillo said. “And that’s a good attitude to have.”

“Our 0-6 start really got us down,” Brusca said “After we started winning and started to regroup, we thought there were some things that we needed to fix, and we started to fix them. Everybody’s hopes are a lot higher than they were when we were 0-6.”

“It’ll take a lot of mental preparation and practicing,” West said.

Friday will be senior night, when the Lions will honor their six seniors at 7 p.m.
