Women’s soccer looks to break losing streak

Missouri Southern’s women soccer team is looking to break a three game losing streak.

Starting with a 0-0 tie against Northwest Missouri State University Oct. 1, the Lions have fallen in the past two games, 0-3 against Southwest Baptist University and 1-5 against Truman State University.

The lone Southern score against TSU was by junior forward Tera Reisner off an assist by Kaysie Griffin. Southern made 11 saves in the game and made four shots on goal during the game. TSU made 16 shots on goal with three saves.

Trevor Wachsman, head women’s soccer coach, said the team didn’t play to its potential.

“We’re a better team than we’ve shown in those games,” Wachsman said.

“That’s frustrating for the team and everybody.”

Wachsman remains positive that the team will turn the season around and win the next couple of games. He said there are plenty of games left in the season to help turn the season around.

“We need to stay positive as a group, be there for each other, work for each other and also work hard,” Wachsman said. “It’s maintaining that [positive attitude] and knowing we are better. We need to go out and show that.”

Jessie Noid, senior defender, said the team has been learning from the mistakes made during the last three games.

“We need to start winning, again,” Noid said. “We need to get another win, because I think it will build up confidence and get some momentum going.”

She said the trouble with the team members is not whether or not they have a positive attitude, but that the players are wearing out.

The next game for the Lions is Oct. 10 against Emporia State University at Emporia. Wachsman said Emporia has lost on the road but is undefeated at home. ESU holds the Division II conference record for attendance at a women’s soccer game. The Hornets have an overall record of 3-6 and a conference record of 2-3.

“It will be our first time playing them; they’ll be a decent team,” Noid said.
