Heart. It’s a word that is almost synonymous with Darrell Redmond in the Lions basketball program.

Despite being 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, many thought he played beyond the scope of his size.

“From a size standpoint, he was overmatched every time he took the court,” said Robert Corn, head coach. “But because he plays with a big heart and because of how hard he plays, how smart he plays and the physical toughness that he puts on the floor, he was a positive force in the middle for us.”

Next year, the Lions will be without Redmond for the first time in two years. His absence is something many of them are not looking forward to.

“You don’t replace a person of Darrell Redmond’s heart,” Corn said. “He is a guy who came to work every day.”

Many believe Redmond’s leadership abilities will be missed just as much, if not more than, his playing ability.

“His leadership was a key to our 14 wins this year,” said Caleb Engelken, junior forward. “You never have to worry about him slacking off. Darrell is a leader by example.”

Despite starting 25 games and averaging just over nine points per game this season, Redmond believes this season was the biggest trial he faced as a Lion. Southern lost its last six games and eight of its last 10 games to finish out the season.

“I’d never had a season like that before,” Redmond said. “I’m used to winning. So, that was one of the biggest challenges that I have faced.”

After graduation, Redmond hopes to work with children, giving back to the community.

“I came from a bad place,” Redmond said. “I want to give other kids a chance to better themselves.”

One of the things Redmond said he will miss the most about being a Lion is suiting up for games and being a part of the team.

“Putting on that uniform, you feel like a totally different person,” Redmond said. “You feel like a part of the school, not just a student in the classroom.”
