Campus radio lacks variety

Missouri Southern has one of the most non-diverse radio stations in the state of Missouri. Classical music is and can be great for studying, but the music itself is of little interest to students.

A low power radio station would give students the chance to become more involved in the operation and production of the media format as well as give students a diverse and well-appreciated new base of music.

Local bands and other underground bands may feel a closer connection to the students and audiences they wish to involve in their musical revolution.

The University will benefit too.

Advertising and publicity of the campus will only be a simple turn of the dial away.

Yes, 88.7 KXMS is a traditional and sentimental station for

alumni, students, faculty and the community alike, but it does not serve to bring in the average

person of today.

There is nothing wrong with it today, but there must be room for a new thought or idea to bloom outside the Southern culture. Yes, there is a culture here in Joplin, but it lacks air, especially airwaves.

Southern cannot deny the students a chance to express themselves in a form that is usually freely available on campuses across the nation.

The campus is falling behind and cannot stand much longer before it will feel this burden to bring another station into the budget. Whether the administration will give in or not, it is obvious. Students and instructors do want something beyond classical music. A low power station is the answer.
