Low attendance factors into cancelation of weekly meeting

As the spring semester dwindles, so is the attendance of Missouri Southern’s Campus Activities Board.

For several reasons, Julie Blackford, director of student activities, decided to take a break from the weekly CAB meetings.

“Nobody comes to CAB meetings,” said Grahm Dickinson, senior finance major.

“That’s part of it.”

Blackford said the reason wasn’t entirely due to attendance.

She and Daniel Horner, junior health promotion major, will be traveling to Kansas City to make a presentation about planning events on a dry campus.

CAB has been plagued all semester by poor attendance and sponsored events are winding down for the semester.

“April is always a slow month,” said Jason Givens, senior CIS major.

Dickinson said lately CAB is more productive during the week.

Because they’re the only ones who participate, they get more done when they’re working in the office than at a meeting.

CAB still has a few events planned for the remainder of the spring including the music duo Easily Amused.

The group will be playing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the Lion’s Den.

The date for the next grocery bingo has moved from April 16 to April 15.

The event will still take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Lion’s Den.

CAB will assist in the Earth Day celebration on April 21.

Celebrations will be taking place on the oval during the afternoon. The Student Ecolonomic club will help promote the day and work with the booths. The band Schwag is scheduled to perform for the event. On April 28, CAB is hosting a scary movie night. They will be showing White Noise followed by a trip to the Joplin Spooklight. April 29 is the Spring Fling picnic. CAB will have some small crafts and games at the event for students.

Rounding out the semester is Finals Madness on May 4.

The popular event takes place the evening after classes end for the semester.

It’s a chance for students to relax and have a break before the finals week.

Blackford said though they’re still wrapping things up, students are always welcome to stop by the Student Activities Office on the second-floor of the Billingsly Student Center with ideas or suggestions.

All students are welcome to attend the weekly meetings, which will resume on Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Student Activities Office.
