Men’s vaulters rank nationally

One runner and one more pole-vaulter have been added to Missouri Southern’s list of men with provisional qualifying marks since the MSSU Radio Shack Invitational.

Junior Marcus Walton earned his with a second place time of 1:54.26 in the 800-meter run. He was just .04 seconds from the winner Durrell Williams from Oklahoma Baptist University.

Freshman pole-vaulter Seager Wilson cleared 15’7″ to become the fourth Lion to rank in the top 15 in the nation in Division II pole vault.

“I was happy with it, but it’s obvious it’s not going to get me to nationals,” Wilson said. “So I’ve still got more work to do.”

Senior Matt Campbell took first in the pole vault with 16-08.75. Alumni Chris Turner took fourth with 16-04.75. Senior Kyle Rutledge cleared 16-00.75 for fifth. Wilson took seventh, while sophomore Russell Ellis was number nine in the men’s elite pole vault with 15-01.

Men’s head track and field coach said it is a great feeling knowing you’ve got four people ranked in the top 13 in the nation in pole vault.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay crossed the line in 3:27.47 for third.

The men’s distance medley relay also got third, this time with 10:28.42.

Senior Kyle Rushing cleared the high jump with 6-04.25 for fourth place.

He also debuted in the triple jump and took fifth at the meet with 41-02.25.

Senior Mike Hines threw a fifth place mark of 51-11.00 in the shot put.

Southern had two rank in the top 10 in the 200-meter. Junior Moses Manga dashed to fifth in 23.14. Freshman Justin Franklin came in at 23.35 for eighth.

Rutledge said one of the team’s strengths is the half mile and up, which explains the rankings for the distance runners.

Tyler Chiartano, freshman, ran unattached to a seventh-place finish in the mile invitational with 4:29.81.

Freshman Ryan McPeak clocked 1:15.80 for a fourth place finish in the 600 yard run.

Freshman Dustin Dixon ran his way to a third-place finish of 8:41.22 in the 3000-meter run. Sophomore Kyle Davis finished the race in 8:52.69 good for seventh place.

Freshman Brett Musser finished the 5000-meter run in sixth with 15:37.82. Junior Dustin Miller came in 10th with 15:51.33 with sophomore Ryan Arthur only .08 seconds behind him.

Rutledge said the meet was good for the community and the team.

“A packed house is good for our athletes to know people like to come to our meets,” he said.

The Lions will be sending Campbell, Rutledge, Dixon, Davis, Walton, Hines and the DMR of Davis, Rushing, Walton and Dixon to the Tyson Invitational this weekend.

Rutledge said they hope to break the 10-minute mark in the DMR.

“We’re very, very fortunate this weekend to have six people go to the Tyson Invitational,” he said. “We’ll be the only small school there: 26 D-I schools and only one D-II.”
