Tailgating provides entertainment at football games

Who says Lions can’t two-step?

Southeast Kansas Broadcasting is providing more than one way for Missouri Southern Lions football fans to enjoy the season. 101.7 FM “The Rocket” plays host to all Southern football games, and along with their sister station, Thunder Country 103.5 FM, provides pre-game festivities for every home game.

“We have strong ties to Missouri Southern, and we wanted to have a presence at the home games,” said Lance Sayler, President of SEK Broadcasting.

“There is a variety of entertainment,” said Angela Hampton, creative services director. “We want to have something live because we feel the more we can bring to the tailgate party the better for everyone. Also it allows us to show our appreciation to our listeners and the fans.”

Comedian and magician Don the Entertainer provided entertainment for the home opener against Ouachita Baptist. Southwest Baptist alumnus Rich McCready provided entertainment Sept. 16, accompanied by back-up singer Ashley Graham, a Southern graduate.

“We’ve been really pleased with the turnout,” Hampton said. “In addition to the entertainment, we also have free face painting and temporary tattoos. Also we have free Rib Crib because they are our food sponsor.”

“We are trying to do things non-traditional,” Sayler said. “A lot of radio stations at tailgate parties will play their music and cook some hot dogs. We want to do something different.”

Tailgating festivities at the last home game included singer/songwriter Dustin Treiber providing entertainment. The tailgate festivities begin two hours before kickoff.

Although the entertainment, food and tattoos are free, someone is benefiting from everything going on.

“We raised $103 during the second game of the season through free-will donations for the American Heart Association Relay for Life,” Hampton said.

Don the Entertainer makes a return visit to Southern for Homecoming. Colgate Country Showdown area finalist Kamber Cain on will appear on Nov. 4. Fans will be able to fulfill their American Idol aspirations Oct. 21, when karaoke is presented at noon before the contest against the University of Central Missouri. An additional round of karaoke will be presented after Cain finishes her set.

“Not only are we planning activities for home basketball games, we are considering the possibility of tailgating again next year,” Hampton said.
