Donation helps to renovate Plaster Hall entrance

With change in name, Plaster Hall, formerly Matthews Hall, will receive another change to its façade.

“We are going to improve the entrance on the north side (across from Kuhn Hall),” said Dr. Terri Agee, vice president for business affairs. “It will be constructed to recognize the gift by Robert W. Plaster to the University.”

Bob Harrington, director of the Physical Plant, said Plaster gave the University a seven-figure donation.

“Part of the conditions in his contract for the donation was to create this new portico entrance into what was Matthews Hall,” he said.

Harrington said with the renaming of the building, the school of business administration will change to the Robert W. Plaster Free Enterprise Center.

“That was all part of that agreement,” he said.

As of right now, the transformer will have to moved, Harrington said.

“That transformer is actually going to move around to the backside of the building,” he said. “That will be moved prior to us actually starting part of it.”

Harrington said the architect, Kyle Denham, is currently working on the drawings for the University.

“I expect we are probably two or three weeks away from having the completed construction drawings and once we do that we’ll put it out to bud for a contractor,” he said.

Starting the end of December or first part in January, Harrington said the entrance will have to be closed.

Agee said the University is in the process of preparing construction documents for the portico.

“We actually have not received any bids on that,” she said.

University President Julio León said it is an enhanced entrance for Plaster Hall.

“(It will) make that building a little more like the rest of the buildings on campus,” he said.

León said the renovations will make the building stand out in honor of Plaster.

“We want to have a building that looks nice that will carry his name,” he said.

Agee said it will be a nice addition.

“It will be noticeable from Newman Road,” she said. “It will be lit up at night. It will improve the façade of the facility.”
