Local golfers to lead Lions into spring season

While golf may not have the intense action of some sports, the effort and training required matches that of any other sport.

After five tournaments, the team’s best finish came at the Truman State Invitational after they beat their conference rival, Central Missouri, for fourth place out of sixteen teams. Using their high finish as momentum, the Lions finished fifth at both the Northeastern State Invitational in Sapulpa, Okla., and the Drury Fall Classic in Springfield, Mo. They wound up the season, at Fort Hayes, Kan., after a sixth place finish.

“We had five really good team rounds toward the end of the season,” said head golf coach Kevin Greim. “We had a combined 18 consecutive rounds where our six guys posted a 76 or better. That’s just a really great feeling.”

The team is a testament to the local golf talent in the area.

“David [Eddy], Corey [Clingan], Adam [Nelson] and Seve [Smith] are all local kids who have really done well this season. In fact, Corey, David and Seve all had their first sub-par college round this season. That’s a pretty big deal,” Greim said. “Ben Perry is our sole senior this year and after some equipment adjustments and a couple of confidence boosting rounds, we’re looking forward to seeing him post some good scores this spring.”

While Washburn and Central Missouri still remain the biggest competition, Greim believes his team has what it takes to make it a “force to be reckoned with.”

“The guys know what they need to do. It’s right there in black and white. They know what scores they have to put there – it’s no mystery. They’ve seen other teams do it and they know they can do it too,” Greim said.

Greim’s predictions for the spring season are positive.

“The great thing about our team this year is our work ethic,” he said. “I don’t see any reason we can’t finish were we want to,” Greim said.

The Lions will be back for their spring season in early March.
