Southern readies to show talent

This year’s talent show will be hosted by comedian Buzz Sutherland.

Sutherland has appeared on CMT’s “Comedy Stage,” HBO’s “Comic Relief,” and MTV’s “Half Hour Comedy Hour.” He has also performed on campuses across the country.

The show will be held March 12 at 7 p.m. in Taylor Auditorium.

Thanks to his clean and quick-witted humor, Sutherland has won Comedian of the Year, Entertainer of the Year, and Performer of the Year honors. He has won Comedian of the Year 16 times.

“Buzz keeps it clean but has a great personality for emceeing a talent show,” said Tori Christiansen, director of student activities. “The talent show is always one of the highlights of the year.

“This year we have many vocal acts, a few dance numbers, some instrumental acts and the comedy of emcee Buzz Sutherland.”

According to Melanie Epperson, secretary of student activities, 12 students and one fraternity are currently signed up to perform in the show.

“As of right now we are in the planning stages of setting up our act and we are not exactly sure what we are doing,” said Sigma Pi President Brian Robin, sophomore international business major. “We do plan on performing and we have been in the talent show before.

“We were in it a few years ago and I am not sure what place we got.”

Those who place in the top 4 will receive cash prizes, with first place receiving $200.

But, not everyone is in it for the money.

“I love performing for people,” said Dustin Reeves, freshman undeclared major. “I am a huge people person. I honestly don’t care too much about winning. I am just so glad that I have an opportunity to sing and play in front of an audience.

“I think people should come to the talent show because the performers need all the support we can get, and it shows school spirit as well.”
