Over the weekend Missouri Southern’s volleyball team played four matches in the Dallas Baptist University Patriot Classic. 

In Saturday’s first match, the Lions prevailed over Colorado Christian in five sets with scores of 17-25, 25-23, 26-28, 25-23, and 15-11. The Lions had four players with double digit digs in the match. Junior Janelle Brehm had 22 kills and 11 digs, junior Morgan Nash had 49 assists and 14 digs, junior Emalee Lowe managed 26 digs and junior Brooklynn McCain had 12 digs.

In the second game the Lions played another five-set match, but ultimately tournament host Dallas Baptist rallied from being down two sets to one to beat the Lions. Sets scores were 21-25, 25-18, 25-18, 21-25, 10-15.

On Sunday the Lions split their matches again. The first match against Midwestern State was a five-set victory with set scores of 25-27, 25-19, 25-23, 14-25 and 15-13. Nash led the way once again with 12 kills, 36 assists and 10 digs.

In the second match of the day, the Lions fell in three sets to Henderson State with set scores of 11-25, 15-25, and 21-25.

On Tuesday night, the Lions opened their MIAA season at Pittsburg State. The Lions ended up losing in four sets with scores of 23-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 17-25. Nash put on another stellar performance picking up what is already her third triple-double of the season by tallying 12 kills, 28 assists and 10 digs. Junior Alyssa Diaz notched 19 kills, Brehm, McCain, and junior Shaylon Sharp had 24, 16 and 12 digs respectively. Freshman Makenzie Fa’amausili-Cacoulidis picked up a double-double with 10 digs and 14 assists.

Prior to Tuesday night’s action, The Lions were leading Division II in total team digs and total team attacks Janelle Brehm was leading Division II in total attacks, while ranking 11th in total kills and 14th in attacks per set.

The Lions are back in action on Friday visiting Newman University in Wichita, KS for a 6 p.m. match.
