Stiles receives local honor

She’s worked in the communications department at Missouri Southern for nearly 25 years, and now she finds herself as one of the most influential women in the area.

Judy Stiles, general manager of KGCS-TV, was selected last month as one of the 15 Most Influential Women of 2010 by Joplin Tri-State Business, a journal focusing on the local business community.

“It really gave me a chance to reflect,” Stiles said. “When they talk about women of influence that have impacted or talked to a lot of people and made an impact on people’s lives, whether it’s the students I’ve been able to work with over the years here or the people in the community I’ve had on interview shows, it really gave me a moment to pause.”

Stiles said she first received a letter notifying her she was among 100 women nominated for the award. After sending a resume and answering some questions, Stiles learned later in the summer that she was one of the 15.

“I was very honored with the award and I’m proud of Missouri Southern supporting the program, as well,” Stiles said. “They (Southern) were a platinum sponsor so they know the value of supporting people in the community.”

Dr. Jay Moorman, communications department head, said it was a “thrill” to work with Stiles.

“She is so dynamic, so focused on doing a great job with the broadcast area, there’s nobody who can really hold a match to her,” he said. “We have an individual willing to lead  and what that says about the department is we have a great colleague. She’s a great asset for Missouri Southern and for the community.”
