Southern Players hosting a 70s-style variety show

Southern Players, the official student organization of Missouri Southern Theatre, will be hosting a 70s Variety Show Fundraiser on Feb. 15 at 6:30 p.m. in the Bud Walton Black Box Theatre here at Southern.

This event will be free to attend, but individuals who wish to participate will have a $5 fee to perform for five minutes. People who wish to perform can do a variety of things in order to showcase talent. This ranges from monologues, to poetry, singing, and guitar playing, all while wearing 70s attire. There will also be a special performance from the cast of Mamma Mia!, the upcoming musical performed by the Southern Theatre Department.

“Ever since Beatnik Night, we’ve been meaning to do another fundraiser,” said Chelsie Jeffries, Southern Players president and event host, “We wanted to have a show that showcases talent like Sher and Dean Martin.”

Southern Players has many ideas of what the money could be used for if the fundraiser is successful. The organization will use the funds for events, parties, and even fund student directors in the Directing Class.

Despite graduating this semester in May, Chelsie would hope for more fundraisers hosted by Southern Players in the future.

“I hope that we are able to do a fundraiser at least once a year,” Jeffries said, “it would be nice to see the community get involved.”

By having these fundraisers, Southern Players not only hopes to raise funds for the theatre department, but have a chance to connect with the community.

“We want to invite people to come and showcase their talents,” added Jeffries.

Also, if individuals want to aid the department with fundraising, they simply have to contact Southern Players.

“People can come talk to me, or when I’m gone, the next Southern Players president,” Jeffries said.

If individuals would like to sign up to showcase their talent, they can sign up on the callboard in the theatre department or can access more information on Southern Players Facebook page.
