Women’s track places second overall at conference, sends 4 to nationals

The Lion’s  womens track and field team finished second with 14 All-MIAA performances and five first place finishes at the 2013 MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 24 in Warrensburg.

“I was very pleased with our effort, our performance and the point outcome at the end,” Head Coach Patty Vavra said.

“We’re never 100 percent pleased that we don’t win conference but we’re really going against the number one team in the country.

“We held them off just about as long as we could.”

The distance medley relay team of Kaitlyn Belisle, Jasmin Hughes, Sydney Potts and Rachel Schrader earned All-MIAA Honors with a time of 12:16.47.

Schrader also earned All-MIAA honors for her first place finish in the 3k and her second place finish in the mile.

Belisle earned All-MIAA honors after following Schrader for a second place finish in the 3k.

Potts finished third in the 800-meter in a time of 2:18.72 to earn All-MIAA status.

Freshman jumper Brittani Reagan earned All-MIAA honors in two events.

Reagan placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 39-6 and first place in the long jump.

Leading the group in the pole vault, Melanie Bower placed first with a height of 12-06.75 followed by Sydney Haase in third and Ashleigh McFarland in fifth.

Bower and Haase earned All-MIAA honors.

“It all came down to conference, that was my last chance to get into the national meet,” Bower said.

Thrower Kylie Cornman earned All-MIAA honors in the weight throw, breaking her personal record by around six feet with a distance of 54-02.

Cornman also won the shot put, earning All-MIAA status with a distance of 47-02.50.

A group of four athletes will be attending Nationals in Birmingham, Ala. on March 8.
