Coach Warren Turner makes MoSo proud

In today’s collegiate coaching world, it seems that every offseason, coaches come and go. Former Missouri Southern baseball Coach Warren Turner was an exception to that, however.

Turner began coaching at Southern in 1977 and continued to do so until his retirement from the sport and the University in 2007.

He had a number of successful seasons on his way to the top of the all-time wins list in Southern baseball history.

One of his biggest accomplishments may be his 852 wins, ranking him first in Southern history and 15th all-time in NCAA history.

He coached Southern teams to second place finishes twice in his career, in both 1978 and 1991, and also took the University to five total national tournaments.

The wins speak a great deal towards how successful a coach he was, but he also received numerous awards.

In 1978, Turner received the most prestigious award of his career when he was named the NAIA coach of the year, and he was named conference coach of the year on three other occasions.

Turner is one of 15 inductees to 2014’s Missouri Hall of Fame class, making this his forth Hall of Fame induction.

The former coach was selected to the NAIA Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004, the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2008 and the MSSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Joining Turner as inductees in 2014 are two other prominent members of the baseball fraternity.

Former Cardinals great Willie McGee and longtime Royal Mike MacFarlane headline the class, but as Turner crosses the stage, the Southern family can rejoice in the celebration of his accomplishments.
