Hearing set on Moore murder case

An arraignment is scheduled for 9 a.m. today at Division III-Joplin Jasper County Circuit Court in Joplin for Jeffrey Bruner, who was arrested on a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Derek Moore, a Missouri Southern football coach.

Bruner will appear before Judge David Mouton. After his arrest on Nov. 1, Bruner was in custody without bond until a preliminary hearing on Jan. 9, where Associate Circuit Judge Richard Copeland set bond at $1 million.

Bruner, 39, is charged with first-degree murder, and a protection order was filed by his estranged wife, Dawn Bruner.

The full order of protection is effective until Jan. 15, with automatic renewal for one additional year. Jeffrey Bruner is ordered not to enter Southern, where Dawn Bruner is employed. Also Jeffrey Bruner is ordered not to come within 500 feet of Dawn Bruner or her children.

A hearing for the protection order is set for Feb. 3, at 9 a.m. with Judge Jerry Holcomb.

According to Joplin Police Department reports, Dawn Bruner and Derek Moore were walking out of Regal Northstar 14 Theatre around 9:50 p.m. Nov. 1, when Jeffrey Bruner confronted Moore and shot him multiple times.

Police and emergency vehicles arrived at the scene minutes later to apprehend Jeffrey Bruner and take Moore to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
