Grace Love, a senior general studies major at Missouri Southern and her partner, Travis Renfro, a certified personal trainer and wellness coach, perform a well executed ariel move for their first of two dances of the evening at Joplin Dancing with the Stars at the Downstream Casino, in Quapaw, Oklahoma on Friday, March 29.

Citizens from the Joplin area will get a chance to see some of their community business men and women dance the evening away, for a good cause.

Downstream Casino Resort will host Dancing with the Joplin Stars Saturday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce Cultural Affairs Committee.

“In prior years, the committee has chosen to have murals painted on the outsides of prominent Joplin buildings on Main Street, as well as one located in City Hall,” said Stephanie McGrew with the Joplin Chamber of Commerce.

The event will be an all-start competition and couples will receive commentaries from judges, and a first place trophy will be awarded.

Judy Schneider, who teaches is a ballroom dance instructor at Missouri Southern State University and operates Judy’s Ballroom Dance Lessons, will be participating this year.

“I was lucky enough to perform in the first event with Lane Roberts, former Chief of Police in Joplin,” Schneider said. “We won The Judges Choice Trophy. Rob O’Brian (President of the Chamber of Commerce) and his partner won the People’s Choice by raising the most money. Rob and I are partners this year,” Schneider added.

“Votes can be purchased on the website for $2. This year, the trophies will be awarded to the couple who generates the most dollars from votes,” McGrew said.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person and includes a plated dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce or online at www.joplincc.com.

“If you like to watch dance, or you know any of the people performing, or if you just want to support the visual arts in Joplin you should attend this special event,” Schneider said.
