Tomorrow offers the Lions (6-0) yet another opportunity to extend a streak. Following two seasons that have seen unprecedented runs, this year’s squad is doing their part to make it a program staple.

Southern has opened this year with victories of multiple fashions, coming from behind and protecting leads, but no matter the circumstance the team has come up with the perfect solution.

“We scrimmage against each other a lot,” said senior Tee Helsel. “We have that kind of atmosphere when first coming in August and we just keep it rolling.”

Up next for the team are the opening MIAA contests of this year’s campaign. With Lindenwood (5-6) coming to the new baseball facility, the Lions have the opportunity to continue the tune-up process — as Southern dials in a starting pitching staff and a bullpen strategy that will undoubtedly become important as the season rolls on.

“The pitching rotation is very important to establish,” said senior pitcher Ryan Spry. “Have to find out who will give us the best chance to win for the rest of the season.”

Emerging as a star for Southern is junior transfer center fielder Chris Hoffman. Hitting .588 throughout the first six games, Hoffman has shown some power the Lions have lacked at the plate, tallying three home runs and 10 RBIs thus far.

Games start tomorrow at 1 p.m. between the conference foes, with three contest over the next two days to follow.
