Southern looks to catch stride during road trip

The Missouri Southern women’s volleyball team was back in action last weekend as they competed in the Arkansas Tech University Tournament.

This would be the final non-conference tournament of the season for the Lions. They have one more non-conference matchup left.

The Lions would see the Midwestern State Mustangs and Quachita Baptist on day one of the tournament.

To open the tourney, the Lions would clash with MSU first. The Lions would drop their opener, losing all three sets, 17-25, 20-25 and 19-25.

Bridgette Jaeger and Abby Finder led the charge for the Lions, as they both picked up double-doubles.

Monica White hit .375, notched seven kills and added six blocks. Katie Wiele had a team-high 12 digs.

Baptist would be the final matchup of the day for the Lions. In a highly competitive match, the Lions were swept three sets to none, 14-25, 22-25 and 22-25.

The final set saw the Lions complete a comeback to tie the set at 22-22, after being down 21-15. Quachita would hold stance there and score the next three points to sweep the Lions.

Finder had 25 assists and 13 digs, her second double-double of the afternoon and third of the season.

On day two, Southern saw two more good programs in Arkansas Tech and Newman University.

After dropping the first two sets to Arkansas Tech, the Lions took the third set, 25-21. ATU took the following set and won the match.

White and Jaeger had 11 kills each with White hitting .500 in the match. Finder dished out 34 assists and 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the year and third of the weekend.

Callie Whetstone added eight kills and five blocks.

The matchup against Newman was the tournament finale for the Lions. Newman won the first two sets quite handily before scratching and clawing to pull out a 27-25 set victory to clinch the match.

The Lions fall to 0-8 on the season.

2012 was the last time the Lions opened up the season losing their first eight games.

Southern will be back in action next Tuesday on the road against Drury for their final non-conference matchup of the season.
