The Missouri Southern soccer team hit the road for two conference games following its four-game home stand. The Lions (2-4, 0-2 MIAA) went 2-2 at home and were looking to get conference started off on the right foot.
The Lions would see first Nebraska-Kearney at Ron & Carol Cope Stadium. The Lions have beaten the Lopers two out of the last three matchups, including last season’s 2-0 shutout at Hal Bodon Field.
The Lopers would get on the board first in the 10th minute. That would prove to be the only goal of the first half. The Lopers led 1-0 at the break.
Only 20 minutes into the second half and trailing, Michaela Altvater assisted Hannah Bomar in her third goal of the season in the 60th minute. The game was now tied 1-1 and would remain that way for the rest of regulation. The Lions would go into overtime for the second time this season.
The overtime period lasted no longer than a minute. Ashtin Pawloski of UNK scored in the first minute of overtime to win the game for the Lopers, 2-1.
Only two Lions took shots in the game, and the Lions were outshot 12-4.
A date with Fort Hays State would wrap up the weekend road conference matchups for the Lions. The Lions are 1-1-1 in their last three matchups against FHSU. Their last win against FHS came in 2012.
The Lions would give up a first-half goal for the fourth consecutive game. In the 20th minute, Jordan Hester of FHS put a breakaway goal on a through ball past senior goalkeeper Shawnee Phillips. FHSU took a 1-0 lead into half.
Right after the break, FHSU scored another goal in the 47th minute. The game would end 2-0 for a FHSU victory.
“We got to step our game up,” said Ronise Miller. “We can’t get depressed and put our heads down. We just got to step it up.”
FHSU out shot Southern 26-5, 13-2 in shots on goal, and took seven corners to the Lions’ one. Phillips recorded 11 saves on the day while seeing a total of 26 shots from FHSU.
Southern has lost four games in row and has been outscored 14-4 during the streak.
Up next for the Lions will be a road trip to Missouri Western. Kickoff for that match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph.
