Southern Theatre ‘Take Two’ kicks off next week

In conjunction with the Spain themed semester, Missouri Southern theatre department will be performing a play next week.
Suicide Prohibited In Springtime is written by Alejandro Casona and has been called a “surreal romance.” The play takes place in a resort, a home for suicide, but no one dies.
Suicide Prohibited in Springtime will run from Oct. 6-10, with a nightly start time of 7:30 p.m., in Bud Walton Theatre at Southern.
For each themed semester, there has been a corresponding theatrical performance since the fall of 2002, with the exception of last year’s Turkey semester.
“It is a terrific way for Southern Theatre to tie in with what we’re doing, as both their students and the community benefit,” said Dr. Chad Stebbins, director of the Institute of International Studies, who hosts the themed semesters.
Stebbins added that he would encourage anyone to take in a Southern Theatre performance, whether it’s a themed-semester play or not.
“You’re practically right on top of the actors, as close as the seats are to the stage,” Stebbins said.
Dr. Jim Lile, theatre department chair, chooses the play that will tie in for the themed semester.
Lile will also be directing the upcoming performance.
“It’s always a delight [to see students perform],” said Lile. “Every production really is a journey, where you start to where you go.”
Lile also said there are always students who are able to use their natural abilities, but others who need to learn some.
As they move along the path of learning, new skills are assimilated and all the pieces mesh to create the performance.
“To watch the progress, it’s one of the things that keeps you in educational theater,” Lile said.
Preparation for any theater performance takes time.
Lile commented the preparation for this production has been about five weeks in the making.
“There is a lot of work to do,” said Lile. “We want to be sure we have plenty of time to do what we need to do.”
“This play has its title working against it,” he said. “I hope people will open their minds and give it a chance, especially since it is part of the Spain semester.”
Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and non-MSSU students.
MSSU faculty/staff can receive two free tickets and students can receive one free ticket per student ID.
