Soccer program has open tryouts

The Missouri Southern soccer program is holding an open walk-on tryout tomorrow at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

Goalkeeping practice begins at 10 a.m. and practice for skilled position players begin at 10:45 a.m.

Currently, there are 20 players on the roster for new first year head coach at Southern Chris McNaughton. McNaughton, who was announced Southern head coach on Jan. 13, wants to add at least 10 more players to the roster and feels like there may be some hidden talent throughout the Southern student body.

“We’re trying to build the roster with quality players,” said McNaughton. “There’s definitely talented players in place here. They’re going to get the first opportunity to prove that they belong on the filed or they don’t. Our job as a staff is to make sure we surround those players with the best players that we can.”

McNaughton mentioned the signing of a local walk-on from Carthage High School which help spur the interest in having this open tryout.

McNaughton doesn’t plan on having another open tryout during his tenure here at Southern. He was adamant in that he clearly wants to create competition and depth with adding several more players to this roster.

“This is a one-time deal,” said McNaughton. “Until next year where I can fully get acclimated with recruiting and stuff of that nature, we’re having this tryout to see if we can stumble upon a hidden gem. That’s all this is.”
