Event to benefit Shakespeare Festival

That Shakespeare Thing is a wine and dessert reception being held April 30 at 7:30 pm in the Connor Ballroom in Billingsly Student Center at Missouri Southern.

The event intends to raise funds for the MO Shakes Missouri Shakespeare Festival this summer, which will be presenting Romeo and Juliet this June.

“We’re really excited for That Shakespeare Thing because it is a first-time event,” said Dr. Jim Lile, department chair of the Southern Theatre department.

The event will involve “sweets, goodies, and visiting” as well as a silent auction and Shakespeare performances.

Among those performing are Dr. Lile, Ann Lile, and Matt Campbell who will be directing Romeo and Juliet this summer.

Prominent members of the community will also be performing.

These performances include: President of the Joplin-Area Chamber of Commerce Rob O’Brien, radio personality Howie Nunnelly, Community Arts Director at Connect2Culture Emily Frankoski, Jessica Schaer at KSN, and City Councilman and Edward Jones Financial Advisor Ryan Stanley.

Following these performances, there will be a vote to see who is the crowd favorite by who gets the loudest cheers.

People can also go online to moshakesfest.com to pledge support for their favorite performer.

The Missouri Shakespeare Festival has been hosted annually since 2013 and aims to “offer the plays of William Shakespeare in productions that are insightful, exciting, and entertaining. In other words, we are not mounting a museum display but are, rather, seeking to bring these play to our community with vitality and currency.”
