With four weeks left in the season, the women’s track and field team is picking up where it left off in indoor.

On March 2, two Lady Lions traveled to Coffeyville Community College to compete in a pick-up in the middle of the season. The meets results did not count for the Lady Lions toward the national championships due to the fact that they were the only four-year school attending.

Melissa Turner competed in the pole vault and set a school record with a vault of 11-6.

“I’m doing a lot better now as I did this time last year,” Turner said.

Her goal for this season is 12.

Danee Jones also attended and took part in the discuss, throwing 142, her best of the year.

On April 5 and 6, the Lady Lions hosted their only home meet of the season and placed second overall. Vavra thought the team made improvements, which is the goal of the team for every meet.

“Our ladies are starting to come around a little bit, start to improve a little bit, now we get to the part of the season where the competition is going to be extremely stiff,” said head coach Patty Vavra.

Mary Garrett set a school record and provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.92. She now has the best time in the nation in Division II. Garrett also won the 100-meter hurdles and ran in the 4×100 relay team that placed second.

Jones was the high point individual of the meet, winning the discuss and the hammer as well as placing third in the shot put. She is now ranked in the top 10 or 12 in the nation for the hammer.

Other results include: Charmaine Kent who won the triple jump with a jump of 37-8; Iashia Castle finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17-6; Alisha Adams finished third in the 800 with a time of 2:19; Shonna Sherrell won the javelin with a toss of 120-4; the Lady Lions mile relay team won with two substitutes; Jenn Noelken won the steeple chase in a time of 11:46, setting her second best personal record ever; and Rachel Patterson won the 5,000-meter run in a time of 19:11.

The team is competing this week at the University of Arkansas and will be one of few or the only Division II school in attendance.
