Volleyball team remains positive, finds another win

Coming off a 1-2 record at Cameron’s Coca-Cola Classic Sept. 10-11, the Lions Volleyball team moved to 5-4 after a 3-1 victory over Southwest Baptist University.

Senior Jackie Gallagher led the Lions with 17 kills. Junior Denise Lancaster and freshman Ashley Wright had seven and six respectively.

Head coach Chris Willis was happy with the victory, but said the team learned a lot from the weekend.

“What we found out that weekend was that we have the capability to play with the top 25 teams in the nation,” Willis said. “We also found out that we have the capability to lose to anyone out there.”

The Lions won their first match 3-0 against West Texas A&M before losing to Cameron University and the University of Central Oklahoma.

Willis said he would like to see more people come and watch the games, especially to see seniors Sara Jaynes and Gallagher.

“[Gallagher] is one of the top players in the nation,” Willis said. “This is the last chance to see her play.”

Gallagher has led the Lions in kills in eight of the first nine matches of the season.

Despite disappointment of their performance, Willis remains positive of the team’s potential.

The Lions do battle with Henderson State University at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Washburn University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Both matches are set to take place in Young Gymnasium.
