Women take game, while men fall back

Although Missouri Southern’s men fought back hard each time, the games against the Miners and the Bulldogs ended up as two defeats for the Lions.

On Jan. 26, the Lions fought against the University of Missouri-Rolla, but the Miners would finish victorious at the end.

Although Orestus Cavness, senior forward, would score the first points with a 2-point lay-up, Southern would trail throughout the game. They would be behind as many as 14 points in the second half, but coming close to tying score when Quentin Edwards, junior guard, would shoot a free throw, getting the Lions within one point of the Miners at 62-61.

Cavness would finish the game as Lions’ top scorer with a 12-point total, scoring 11 of the points in the first half.

Caleb Engelken, senior forward, was the second highest scorer for the Lions, ending it by scoring 11 points, one point for each minute he competed in the game.

On Jan. 30, Southern suffered defeat against Truman State University with a score of 73-62.

The Lions would tie the came when Edwards would go for a lay-up, scoring two points to make the score 9-9.

However, TSU would pull ahead within less than a minute.

Southern would trail the entire of second half. However, they would fight back, taking the score to as close as 54-51. The most they would be behind would be 18 points when they were 3:22 into the second half.

Cavness would be the top scorer in the game for the 12th time in the season, finishing with 19 total points, shooting 11 out of his 16 attempted free throws.

On Feb. 2, the Miners beat the Lions with a score of 74-68. The current standing for Southern is 9-13 overall and they have a conference record of 5-6 for the MIAA.

After pouncing on the Lady Miners, the Southern women went on to suffer defeat at the paws of the Lady Bulldogs.

On Jan. 26, the Lions experienced a victory against the University of Missouri-Rolla with a score of 56-52.

The Miners would lead the first 15 minutes of the game, but Southern wouldn’t let themselves stay behind as they took it over and held on until two minutes into the second half. However, they would regain it with 5:55 left in the game.

The high scorer for the game was Vonny Wilson, senior forward, who scored 18 points to help take the game for the Lions. Wilson also scored 100 percent of her free throws for the game. The team as a whole would score 95.7 percent of their free throws.

In a game that kept the fans on the edge of their seats, Southern lost by one point to Truman State University on Jan. 29, with a score of 57-56.

During the first half, the Lions led the way with 31 points earned by the team. Hallman was the leader in points when she scored 13 points and was the only Lion to score a three-pointer.

Wilson would come in second in points with a total of eight. Southern would earn 25 more points for the second half, but it was not be enough to win the game. TSU would fight back to take the lead, scoring 29 points in the second half.

They would not take the lead until the game held only five seconds left as the Bulldog’s Annie Westhoff, forward, went in for a lay-up. The lead scorer for the Lions was Hallman with a total of 22 points.

Dacie Reutlinger, junior forward, would have a eight total rebounds, and she would make four field goals.

On Feb. 2, the Lions defeated the Lady Miners in a close game. The end score was 44-42.

The season record for Southern stands at 14-6 over-all and at 6-5 for the MIAA conference.
